A Taste of River Cruising with Riviera Travel

Jordan from New Era Travel recently flew over to Cologne to check out Riviera Travel's river cruise ship, MS Geoffrey Chaucer. He had the opportunity to tour the vessel, explore the different accommodation options, and even sample the delicious food onboard. Here's what he discovered...

Carrying a maximum of 169 travellers, Geoffrey Chaucer is truly a luxurious vessel, offering spacious public areas and stunning river views, but without the five-star price tag. More British guests choose Riviera Travel for their river cruise holiday than any other company, and I can see why it appeals so much. I was impressed by the comfortable and well-appointed cabins, all of which include tea and coffee making facilities, large bathrooms and providing the perfect place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery. Even the entry-level cabins on lower deck were bright and airy with a large panoramic window at head-height. You can't go wrong with whichever cabin choice you pick.

When it comes to dining, the ship goes above and beyond. I had the chance to taste the delightful lunch menu in the main restaurant prepared by the talented chefs onboard. A wonderful buffet selection of salad, cold cuts of meat, and fresh bread were beautifully presented. A live-cooking station served up made-to-order pasta. There were also a selection of plated options to order from. I enjoyed the tomato and pesto soup, and a mouth-watering slow roasted striploin of veal, with mashed potato, vegetables and a red wine jus. A selection of desserts were also available including a pistachio creme brule, black forest cake and a fantastic looking cheese platter. Using fresh, local ingredients, the dishes are sure to be a true culinary delight. From breakfast to dinner, the dining experience on Geoffrey Chaucer is top-notch. All guests also have the option of dining at least once in the intimate bistro overlooking the back of the vessel. This alternative dining venue is open for lunch and dinner and offers a gastronomic feast.

During the visit, I also had the opportunity to explore the ship's amenities. The onboard wellness room offers a range of treatments and relaxation options. There is also a beauty salon and the fitness center was well-equipped, allowing guests to stay active while cruising. There's a small boutique shop selling souvenirs, branded merchandise, handbags, jewellery and clothing items. The panoramic lounge has plenty of seating and great views. There's also an outdoor seating area at the very front. This is the main entertainment area, where destination talks, quizzes and games are played during the day. In the evening, guests can expect good pre-dinner conversations, followed by live music and local entertainment. On the sun deck, you can find a good mix of deck chairs, tables, and sofas to unwind and watch the scenery float by. Geoffrey Chaucer also has a small bathing pool and a putting green. You can also visit the bridge to learn how they navigate the rivers, how the water flow direction dictates how fast they can travel and the technology they use to safely monitor the ship.

As for the itineraries, I learned that Riviera Travel has curated an incredible collection of must-see journeys along the rivers of Europe. Each stop offers a unique experience, with guided tours and excursions included. With Riviera Travel's curated itineraries, you will be able to explore fascinating cities, charming towns, and breathtaking landscapes. Excursions have been designed to truly immerse yourself in the history and culture of each destination you visit along the way. I really like the sound of their Festive River Cruise programme. These shorter-duration sailings offer great value for money, the chance to visit a number of iconic cities on one holiday and stock-up on authentic Christmas gifts. They are also one of the only river cruise operators to offer New Year celebration cruises on both the Rhine and Danube.

Overall, I had an unforgettable experience onboard MS Geoffrey Chaucer. Even though my time onboard was very short, I learned a lot about river cruising and the warm hospitality that Riviera Travel continue to win awards for. It's definitely an experience worth considering for your next holiday!
